Back to the Roots

When we are talking about Web 2.0, we should take a few minutes to close the circle and have a look back to the roots of the Web.

My favorite source for finding old versions of websites:
Wayback Machine of Internet Archive.
Lets me browse through 55 billion (!) web pages from all around the world archived from 1996 to a few months ago.

How could this service be useful for Search Consultants and Research Professionals?

  • Legal issues - Somebody is claiming violation of copyright laws, the accused (company) is denying the case. An older version of the accused website could prove the violation…
  • False claims of job reference - old websites could confirm or counterdict such claims…
  • Proof of job reference - and just the opposite could help somebody to find and prove lost reference

Besides, the Internet Archive is a treasure chest of anything concerning the Roots of the Web…

Do you remember the worlds very first Webcam, who soon became a cult location of Web 1.0 (in O´reilly terms)? And do you know the story behind?

Necessity may be the mother of invention but coffee is the fuel. Tired of walking down three flights of stairs only to find an empty coffee pot, the engineers at ATM Networks created the worlds first web cam.

The (non biographical) story of the Trojan Room Coffee Machine

Time for a coffeebreak!
